Volunteer Op Shops - Thrifty V

Our team 2020

Our team 2020

The 2019-2020 financial year saw Thrifty V return a profit of $20,403 contributing to the support of patients, their families and loved ones across the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN) including the Lyell McEwin and Modbury Hospitals.

This was a challenging year for Thrifty V due to COVID-19 and the closure of the Elizabeth Vale Thrifty V Op Shop. The Elizabeth Vale shop had a dedicated clientele and had a monthly turnover of in excess of $3,000. The Association was given notice early in 2019 that the Shopping Centre was being sold and a new development would mean the demolition of the shop in 2020. It was decided to vacate the shop late in 2019 with the last day of trading being 16th December 2019.

Wendy Kent, Thrifty V Manager, was successful in locating a vacant shop in the Elizabeth South Shopping Centre located at 110 Phillip Highway and after much negotiating secured the shop and opened for business at the beginning of February 2020.

Unfortunately the new shop in addition to the Superstore and Elizabeth North Shop were forced to close on the 25th March 2020 due to COVID-19. The Operations Centre also closed on this date.

It was not until late June/ early July that the Operations Centre and Op Shops reopened with COVID-19 restrictions in place. It was obvious people were keen to get out of their homes for some retail therapy as sales in the first week of reopening were very impressive, with the Phillip Highway Superstore recording one of its best trading days. Sales have continued to be strong even with the new store as it builds its regular clientele

Wendy continues to manage the Operation Centre and the three Op Shops supported by over 60 wonderful dedicated volunteers. Volunteer hours are significantly lower than 2019 due to the three month closure (March to June) of the Thrifty V program, however between the three Op Shops and Operation Centre, over 22,500 hours have been provided by volunteers throughout the year.

Thrifty V is committed to reducing landfill and is keen to repurpose or recycle all goods that are received as donations. We are very proud for the minimisation of landfill through the recycling of all goods, including e-waste, that has also resulted in lower dumping and waste costs

In closing, I would like to say a huge thankyou to all the special volunteers who give their time to support others within the local community. Without your support, Thrifty V would not have obtained the positive outcome it has this year.
